Last week, I just couldn’t make comics. I was too sad. My dog, Dexter, died last Monday. I got Dex nearly 13 years ago a few days after my German Shepherd had died. I was 20 years old and I was a mess. Ginger, my German Shepherd, had been with me since I was 7. She had seen me through growing up. I was a wreck when she died. She died on a Monday, and I brought Dexter home on Friday.

Dexter was a whippet. When I met him, I was walking through a mall and there was a pet store by the door. It was a cold November day and Dexter, a tiny puppy. was shivering by the door. He looked so pathetic. He quickly licked my face and that was it. He was my puppy.

Dexter saw me through some of the darkest times of my life. It was before I went to therapy or was medicated at all for my depression. That he was always happy to see me, and even missed me when we were sleeping, did so much for me. The years I had Dexter were the years I was alone. He loved me when there was no else to.

Dexter was a very playful dog. Ginger was not one for play, but Dexter loved to chase after anything I threw. Frisbees were his favorite, jumping high into the air for spectacular catches. We did dog training together. Until I got married two years ago, Dexter spent every night in my bed, often falling asleep with his head on my shoulder.

Five years ago, my mother got a dog, a blue heeler named Dixie. Dexter and Dixie got along great, and I’m glad I still have a dog in the house right now.

Dexter was my puppy. He ran and played, slowing down in his old age. A week ago, he suffered a break in his leg that lead to the discovery of bone cancer. There was nothing to be done. He ran and played until that day, for which I am grateful. I will miss him terribly, but I am even more thankful that I knew him.

The other day, I finished the first issue of Incoherent, which means now it’s just a matter of weeks until it makes its way into your digital hands. I’m already hard at work on the second issue, which is scheduled for August. The important thing to me is that I’ll have three of these puppies out in 2013, which should make my Eisner nomination snub a sure thing. Who needs the validation of one’s peers in the form of an award you have to dust anyway? Is it weird I’d rather have that than money? Okay, I’ll take the money too.

There is something that is very George W. Bush-ish about Funtastic in this comic. Or maybe Stephen Colbert.

Really, Dubya is the gift that keeps on giving. With the recent opening of his Presidential Library (or as he is likely to call it, “li-berry”), Dubya commented on his latest hobby, painting. I somehow think it isn’t only color he sees differently, but that’s part of what makes him special. I practically made a career out of lampooning him in the past and I think I miss it.

Speaking of corporate overlords, my day job asked me to write a blog post about how I make this comic. What I ended up with was too much content. It turns out, when I thought about it, making this comic is a lot of work. I know it doesn’t look like it per se, but due to my general lack of talent, this is is a lot harder than it looks. You can see the first evidence of that here.

So, what I’m really saying is I need you to pre-emptively contribute to the defense fund for when I’m eventually arrested and put on trial for the horrible things this comic has made me Google over the years.

I suppose in someway, I could try to claim this is really all a commentary on CISPA, but it’s not. All this comic really does is further Kimberlin’s plot. Or is that scheme? What is she up to? Mining? Wait.. wasn’t someone else digging below the factory….?
